Amanda C. Hymer, daughter of Jesse P. and Eliza Hymer, was
born in Putnam County, Indiana May 26, 1837 and was married to James W. Darnall
Oct 31, 1856. She was the mother of 8
children, two of whom preceded her to the Glory Land, leaving six to mourn her
loss, namely, Dr. JJ Darnall of Denver, Colorado; Thomas J of Roachdale, Ind;
Mrs. Anna E. Vancleve of Montgomery County; Mrs. Ida M. Hathaway of Putnam
County; Miss Carrie W. Darnall of Cincinnati, Ohio and Frank T of Hamilton
County and all are present except Mrs. Vancleve. In addition to her immediate
family she has five sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Billingsly, of Indianapolis; Mrs.
Georgia A. Nelson of Greencastle; Mrs. Harriet Hill and Mrs. Alma Bridges of Roachdale;
Mrs. Laura Brewer of Crawfordsville and one brother, James W. Hymer of
Crawfordsville all being in attendance on this sad occasion except Mrs.
Billingsly and Mrs. Nelson. She with her husband united with the Christian
Church at New Market in Montgomery County in 1885 and moved to Hamilton County
and identified herself with the Eagle Creek Christian Church. She was fully
conscious of the duties and responsibilities of the Christian life and in her
every day walk manifesteing many of the Graces that adorn the Christian. A
loving wife and companion, a devoted and self-sacrificing mother, showing great
interest in the welfare of those that were near and dear to her during her
sickness. Her physical suffering was
very severe yet she bore it all bravely and manifested the sweetest Christian
spirit. Perfectly resigned and submissive she was often heard to say, “It is so
blessed to have a precious Savior to help us bear all of afflictions.” She was never heard to murmur or complain and
never was her pain and suffering so great but what she could and did speak
words of kindess of those ministering to her comfort. Thus the sweetness and
gentlesness of this kind and precious mother was manifest to the end of her
sufferings which came at 10 o’clock Sunday morning April 28, 1907, aged 69
years, 10 months and 28 days. Let us mourn not as those that have no hope; but
rather rejoice for our mother is not dead but only sleepeth while the body is
consigned to Mother Earth, her spirit is in the sweet embraces of a loving and
precious Savior and let us treasure her memory and emulate her example of
looking only to God, who is able and will remit the broken ties of earth around
the great white throne where death never comes and farewells are never spoken.
